The child grew up and became spiritually strong, and he was in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance. Luke 1:80
The Wilderness seems to be the place where God does a 180 on our souls. He humbles us and brings us to the place where He resides; among the lowly and humble.
For this is what the high and exalted One says–He who lives forever, whose Name is Holy: “I live in a high and holy place, but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite.” Isaiah 57:15
The garden of growth and spiritual revival, where stoney hearts are resurrected into hearts of flesh takes place in the wild back country of The Wilderness; a place of utterly dependent, silent, unpredictable and unstructured living and waiting. Our Lord brings us to this land far away where we learn to depend solely on Him, where He hand feeds us, one bite at a time, nourishing our souls with diet specific, personally planned spoon-fed love.
The child grew up…the Wilderness is not for the young or the weak..
And became spiritually strong…Just as Solomon was already wise enough to ask God for wisdom, John the Baptist was already spiritually strong when he willingly walked into the great abyss of The Wilderness.
…and he was in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance.
The Father was preparing John before John could prepare the way for His Son, and his preparation was absolute isolation from everything but God. The place where we don’t know which way is out or which end is up; where the dark night makes clear, the light of God; this is the place where some of God’s greatest work is accomplished in us; in the spiritually rich soil of God’s country: The Wilderness.
